December 2000. Ireland. Carrigaline to be precise. White stuff on the ground. Possibly snow. We hadn’t seen it in so long that we weren’t really sure. Nevertheless, there were snowballs made, many photos taken on crappy old 35mm compact camera (my first camera). A walk to the top of the world and back again. It’s been too long.
September 2002. A trip out to Sherkin Island with Kev and Foss to swim (or paddle shin deep in my case), play football on the beach, take some photos and just enjoy the sun. Didn’t think I’d be back here only 7 seemingly short years later for Kev’s stag party. Then, the confirmation came that the other fella, Foss, is now also engaged. Good thing I don’t have a tendency to feel like the odd one out!
February 2003. My first visit to Canada also brought me to California for a week. It was, as you may expect, a week packed with as many tourist activities as one could possibly squeeze into such a relatively short period of time. June 2003. Whilst at a very loose end one day and wanting to clear the head of unpleasant thoughts, I invented the tour which shall forever be known as the “Solstice Sojourn”. Started at home in Carrigaline, west taking in Bandon, Clonakilty, Skibbereen, Schull, Leap, Sheeps Head, Bantry, Glengarriff and a few other towns that I can’t remember. Just down the road from Bleskensgraaf, where we spent our first few nights. Kinderdijk appears to be the place to go in Holland to see windmills. At least that’s what the car park full of coach tours, campers and cars with foreign registrations suggested. Makes a definite change from what we’d seen up till then, one or two windmills dotted around the landscape.
Powerscourt house, just off the N11 at Enniskerry in Wicklow. A nice spot for a Sunday (or Saturday in this case) stroll. Nice too are the sweet shops inside the house. Possibly nicest of all is when you get back to the car and get to munch on your purchases! Incidentally, we’re off to Holland for a few days so posting is going to be extra light. But expect lots of windmills n’ stuff on Tuesday or Wednesday!
Fountainstown, sitting on the rocks at the beach one evening after going down to Cork for the weekend. Can’t help but think of the rule of thirds and how I’ve possibly not followed it’s teachings here. Meh, rules are made to be broken. Especially photography rules.
Taken for my sofobomo project, this is in The Burren in Co. Clare. During our weekend on the west coast, I spent a bit of time searching for the right wall, with the right patch of grass beneath it and the right patch of clouds behind it. I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out.
Spending a few days around Cork & Kerry shooting a mixture of Velvia, Neopan and PanF. After (very successfully) developing three rolls of Velvia so far, I have to say that I’m in love. It’s a pain to develop but it’s just too worth it. This is the top of the hill at Barley Lake between Kenmare & Bantry. The lake is behind me somewhere. Must dev those last three rolls soon.
So I’ve not been around here in the last few days. Updating has gotten rather slack and I blame at least 67% of that on trying to get my SoFoBoMo ’09 book done on time. Time which runs out tomorrow. Possibly one of the most fantastic places in the world* is the ring of Kerry. I love the place. I had a habit of going down there every other weekend when I lived in Cork so taking trip down a couple of months back to drive around there for a few days was a plan brilliant in it’s simplicity. Or err, something like that. (*given that I haven’t seen a lot of the world…yet)
Finally reached the older section of Glasnevin graveyard and just the right time to have borrowed Al’s Hasselblad to run a roll of neopan through.
Howth beach. A grand day out while the sun shines. Tides out so plenty of beach to play on. But don’t walk on those ripples of sand for too long in your bare feet or they’ll start to hurt. Or.. at least that’s my experience. Although I don’t think I ever successfully flew a kite. Deprived childhood don’t ya know.
