Gougane Barra Forest

December 29, 2018 Canon 24-70, Canon 60D, Cork, Landscape

Back at the end of November, we took a long overdue drive to the forest at Gougane Barra. Long overdue in comparison to how frequently I usually visited in winter during, lets call it, the height of my photographic journey. Visit frequency dropped off quite rapidly for a few reasons. The introduction of the barriers with the eye-watering entry fee (or at least what I’d consider eye-watering for a forest) added to my imaginary woes. My other standard rant wasRead More

Neist Point Lighthouse

November 12, 2018 Canon 5D, Canon 70-200, Landscape, Scotland, UK

One of the destinations on Skye that I was going to get to, even if I had to crawl to it. After setting someone else’s photo of this location as my computer wallpaper many months ago, I needed to get here to take my own version. This isn’t it. It’ll be along shortly. The road to the lighthouse is very long, very single track and very full of animals. Also very full of tourists that randomly stop to take photosRead More

The Guardian

Back to Skye briefly. To this herd in a field at the side of the road and this particularly suspicious hairy coo that kept watch on the dozen or so tourists that had slammed on their brakes, pulled onto the soft verge and began taking photos while their rental cars slowly sank into oblivion.

Toward Glen Etive

On the way back through Glencoe, we stopped briefly at the side of the road to have an in-car picnic. Mostly because the rain was so heavy, getting out of the car would have meant swimming toward the nearest picnic spot. As is normal in Scotland, the rain stopped and started every couple of minutes. The fast moving cloud created amazing contrast on the mountains in the distance. After taking this and checking exposure on the back of the camera,Read More

Molls Gap

October 6, 2018 Canon 24-70, Canon 60D, Kerry, Landscape

One of the many gateways to the Ring of Kerry (as far as I’m concerned anyway) at Molls Gap just outside Kenmare. Taken on that same particularly sunny New Years outing in 2017 that we saw previously. Yes, I’m still a follower of the church of the foreground rock.

Welcome to Scotland

Ahh Scotland, or in this instance, Glencoe. Less Specifically, it seems you can point your camera in pretty much any direction wherever you are in Scotland and produce something that gives the impression that you’re a decent photographer. This was taken after yomping through some very mushy ground to get various angles with my new best friend, Ms. Foreground Tree. There are many, many photos to sort through and many, many landscapes to oogle at. Expect more of this kindRead More

Cast Away

September 26, 2018 Canon 24-70, Canon 5D, Cork, Landscape, People

Trying to catch some dinner at Fort Camden in Crosshaven.

The Entrance to the Harbour

September 22, 2018 Canon 5D, Canon 85 f1.8, Cork, Landscape

Taken a few weeks ago during a walk around Fort Camden. Roches Point lighthouse on the left and France somewhere off in the distance, calling me and the bike.

Brand new year, same old Kerry.

A very familiar stop on a very familiar route, just outside Killarney on the Ring of Kerry. Between the Upper Lake and Muckross Lake. Taken at the start of January 2017. Yes, that’s how long it’s been sitting unseen in my Lightroom queue.

Over Camden

September 12, 2018 Canon 5D, Canon 85 f1.8, Cork, Landscape

Nice afternoon for a stroll around fort Camden in Crosshaven. First time in quite a while.

Part 7: The scenic route back to France

September 2, 2018 France, Landscape, Touring

I woke the following morning to what must have been an answered prayer, it wasn’t as cold as it was supposed to be, and certainly not as cold as it’d been the previous few mornings. There was a stint of hasty packing completed, followed by one final eggy bacon buttery breakfast and enough coffee to temporarily incapacitate a horse. The original plan, which was to exit the Tyrol valley and Austria via the Silvretta pass, was very much still on.Read More

Lone Wanderer

Figures suddenly appearing out of the thick fog as we were walking to the lighthouse at Sheeps Head. Not a situation to be in if you’re paranoid or have seen too many horror films.

Safety First

August 27, 2018 Canon 24-70, Canon 5D, Cork, Landscape

The often captured (seldom with any originality) steps leading down to the lighthouse at Sheeps Head.

Retreating Snowline

August 25, 2018 Canon 24-70, Canon 60D, Kerry, Landscape

Kerry, January 2017. A new years drive from Kenmare to Killarney via Moll’s Gap.

A New Bridge

Gone are the days of hop, skip and jumping between tufts of grass to avoid sinking in the bog. Still, you’d kind of miss the added excitement. Sheeps Head again…

The Low Wall

August 21, 2018 Canon 24-70, Canon 5D, Cork, Landscape

Possibly designed to keep sheep in or out. Very, very small sheep.

Sheeps Head Lighthouse

August 19, 2018 Canon 24-70, Canon 5D, Cork, Landscape

Just a little bit misty down at Sheeps Head yesterday. Perseverance paid off, although not much of a day for whale watching or landscape photography. First time in a long time that the 5D came out, and I realise how much I missed full frame digital.

The Woods on Velvia

August 12, 2018 Bronica ETRS, Cork, Film, Landscape

Back in those ‘good old days’ when I shot (and processed) a lot of medium format Velvia. Before getting entirely sick of it and selling my Jobo processing kit and forgetting which box my Bronica got stored in. Amazing what jumps out at you when you haven’t opened Lightroom in a year or two. I should really look for that Bronica…

Part 6: Fire and Ice

This ‘fire & ice’ route was also hastily borrowed from my friends down the road at the bike rental outfit. Lots of low(ish) roads with scenic vistas and rides through valleys. That kind of thing. Except it’s never really that easy, is it? ‘Another cold start’ I thought, as I stepped back inside the hotel and began thawing out my frozen eyeballs with copious amounts of black coffee over breakfast. Colder than yesterday and as a special extra treat, it’s alsoRead More

Part 5: Leaning Towers and Mountain Goats.

April 9, 2018 Austria, Italy, Landscape, Touring, Travel

I awoke early to a temperature of minus four (centigrade, for my American friends) after a restless night of worrying about my battery and cursing myself for not replacing it before I left. The conclusion I came to last night still held, there was nothing I could do about it now so I’d just have to deal with the outcome. I pulled on suitable dining attire, not bike gear, and went downstairs for breakfast. Again I met the same veryRead More
